News was received in Brisbane yesterday to the effect that Mr Edmondstone Markwell expired at Johannesburg, South Africa, on the 27th November last. Ted Markwell, as he was generally styled, was one of the best known and popular men in Brisbane a few years ago, and the sad news will be received with universal regret. The cause of death was heart failure and though Mr. Markwell had been ailing for some little time, his demise was nevertheless sudden and unexpected. The news was communicated to relatives of the deceased in Brisbane by Mr. Robert Dickson, son of the late Sir James R. Dickson. Mr. Markwell would have been 40 years of age on the 27th instant had he lived. In his youth he occupied a foremost place in the ranks of our amateur cyclists, footballers, and rowers, and was also a splendid foot runner both over hurdles and on the flat. Deceased first went to South Africa as a member of one of the Queensland contingents. After coming home he again went to South Africa, where he secured a lucrative position with the Railway Purchase Stores, Johannesburg, which he continued to fill to the time of his death. Deceased was married to the second daughter of Mr Edward Taylor, of the firm of Taylor and Colledge, Brisbane, his widow and three children being at present in this city. In addition to the place which he won in athletic circles, Mr Markwell was until a few years ago in a large way of business as an auctioneer and commission agent in Queen-street.
